Plays a major role in the clearance of nucleic acids generated through apoptosis, hence preventing autoinflammation. Necessary for proper fetal development and for definitive erythropoiesis in fetal liver and bone marrow, where it degrades nuclear DNA expelled from erythroid precursor cells.
